"In the last few years, credit card companies have done some very effective marketing by showcasing precious moments funded by the use of their cards. As a viewer, you see couples whisked off at a moments notice to eat an Italian dinner... in Italy, a diamond engagement ring large enough to choke a horse... purchased by Lady Visa or Master Card, or a look of rapture on a child's face who gets to go to a fantastic fun-filled vacation in Disney with his family. We are to believe that those extraordinary moments are priceless. But my priceless moment didn't come zip-lining in the rainforests of Costa Rica. Rather it came from what many families take for granted...the sound ot their child's voice speaking and engaging in deliberate communication. Hearing my daughter's throaty, deep little voice is such a thrill. I've heard some mothers say they tire of hearing their child call "Mommy, Mommy," all day long, but if you prayed for that single word every night for days and months and years until you finally heard it, you cannot imagine the joy it brings... regardless of how many times it's said. For the continued use of that word and for all the new words and deliberate communication that my daughter is using and how she is growing, I am thankful to Kati Capitan of Central Delaware Speech Language Pathology. Hope is priceless.

My other priceless moment came the day that my child listened and complied with Kati in therapy, easily responding to questions and demands using her gestures, in front of an audience of family and another professional team representative who previously held doubts about her capabilities. This was huge for me. As a mother, I have broadcast the continued belief that my child can and will talk, and that she does understand far more than she expresses. I have advocated that she will not be labled and diagnosed with a number that doesn't belong to her, but that is so easy for professionals to fall back on. Validation is priceless; finally I had proof for all to see that my daughter understands and can communicate. If you have ever once tired of feeling as though you were doubted... that you were just a parent in denial...then you can understand my happiness that day. Once again, my appreciation for Kati's concrete goals, tenacious follow-through and passion for her work is "priceless." at CDSLP, clients are seen individuals.

So when I occassionally whip out my charge card to cover expenses while I cross my fingers and toes that my insurance carrier will continue to cover services, I know that the benefits by far outweigh the costs in the end, her therapy is worth every penny even if I pay out pocket. "My granddaughter, Hope, only weighed 4 lbs, 10 oz when she was born, and she was 3 weeks early. By the time she was 6 months old, and because of my work with young children, I knew that Hope would need extra help in her development. She has a speech and cognitive delay.
