"Kati has provided excellent services to both of my children. Originally my son began and struggled with his /r/ sound, but now is able to enunciate properly. As a result, his self-esteem has increased and he feels much more comfortable in social settings. Kati has a natural ability to work with people and is enhanced by her knowledge in her field."

About CDSLP : Staff Bios

Kati Capitan, M.S., CCC-SLP
Kathleen Capitan, M.S., CCC-SLP is an American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Delaware/New Jersey certified speech-language pathologist. Kathleen is a 2003 graduate of Loyola College, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and was first in her class for Speech-Language Pathology. She went on to receive her Master’s Degree in the Communication Sciences and Disorders department of James Madison University in Virginia.
Kathleen has dedicated her life to serving children, and has extensive professional experience working with children diagnosed with a wide variety of communication and related disorders. In New Jersey, she served as Program Coordinator and Staff Speech Pathologist for a large organization serving children with special needs, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorders, traumatic brain injuries, developmental disabilities, behavioral challenges, genetic syndromes, and other impairments. She was responsible for IEP planning, conducting clinical assessments, and carrying out treatments for speech-language disorders, as well as designing and implementing a comprehensive school dysphagia program to serve children with special feeding needs. She also programmed for the residential communication and feeding needs of children and adolescents living on campus and within the community. Kathleen also worked for a private practice in New Jersey, serving as Staff Speech Pathologist and Supervisor of Feeding Services. In addition, she served both children and adolescents as the facilitator for social skills development groups run through an area business. Her areas of expertise include evaluating and treating children with articulation disorders, expressive/receptive language disorders, non-verbal language disorders, auditory processing disorders, apraxia of speech, orofacial myofunctional disorders, phonological disorders, voice disorders, fluency disorders or “stuttering,” and pragmatic/social skill delays.
Kathleen has presented nationally on topics in speech pathology, including technology and telecommunications in speech pathology, feeding therapy, HIPAA and health services, and social skills and language, and has published research on those topics. She has trained under supervisors and professors from Johns Hopkins, A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children, and other prominent institutions. Believing strongly in continuing education and “cutting edge” therapy techniques, Kathleen has received training in Physical Restructuring of Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets (PROMPT), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), and the Sequential-Oral-Sensory (SOS) program for feeding. Kati most recently spoke with fellow SLP Beth Nottingham at the MOTA (Maryland Occupational Therapy Association) conference on the Evaluation and Treatment of Feeding Disorders.
Kathleen has recently become a member of the Board of Directors for both the Child Help Foundation and BIAD (Brain Injury Association of Delaware). She is also serving as the Chairperson of funds development for BIAD. CDSLP will begin compiling the quarterly Child Help Foundation newsletter shortly. These new opportunities will bring networking and educational opportunities for CDSLP and our clients. CDSLP is looking forward to working with both organizations!
Kathleen was raised in Delaware, and is honored to achieve her lifelong dream of operating a speech-language clinic in her hometown. Her philosophy in therapy is, “Every child has limitless potential. An excellent therapist is one who provides the foundation, the tools, and the encouragement for each child to achieve his or her personal best.
